VA Grant
Is Awarded
Dr. Wood
Dr. Charles Wood, professor of
pharmacology at the Louisiana
State University at the LSU
Medical School in Shreveport,
has been awarded a $50,000
research grant from the Veter-ans
Administration Department
of Medicine and Surgery, Wash-ington,
D.C., Dr. Lionel M.
Bernstein, director of the re-search
service, has announced.
Dr. Wood is the principal
investigator for the project,
working in conjunction with Dr.
Theodore A. Koerner, chief of
the laboratory Service at the VA
Hospital here.
The LSU professor said that
with the grant "a permanent
research program between the
VA hospital and the medical
school" is estabished.
The title of the research
project is "Hypertension from an
Altered State of Autonomic Bal-ance
in Hypothalamus."
Dr. Wood explained that the
hypothalamus is a certain area
of the brain which controls many
of the basic responses, including
appetite, thirst and temperature.
It is a tiny structure located at
the base of the brain.
Dr. Wood, working on the
experimental aspect of the pro-ject,
while Dr. Koerner, patholo-gist,
will be in charge of the
clinical.
By working with rats, Dr.
Wood, will determine if damage
to this area of the brain will
Produce prolonged high blood
Pressure in animals.
Dr. Koerner will look for
damage to this area in patients
who have died with hypertension
From understanding of the
problem should come new meth-ods
of treatment, said Dr. Wood.
The grant is for a three-year
project.
