2-State Heart Groups
Told of Screening Plan
Mass screening may reduce
the incident of heart ailments
resulting from coronary artery
diseases in the future, according
to Dr. Gerald S. Berenson, new
president of the Louisiana Heart
Association.
Dr. Berenson of New Orleans,
was among speakers for the
opening day Friday of a two-day
meeting here of the Louisiana
Heart Association and the Ar-kansas
Heart Association at the
Shreveport Convention Center.
Dr. Berenson said obesity,
smoking and many other factors
that increase the risk of heart
ailments due to coronary artery
diseases are easily detectable
through simple physical exami-nation.
He said risk factors can be
pinpointed even among children
and steps taken to reduce the
threat of heart attack later in
life.
Berenson said mass screening
of industrial employes and other
groups could reduce the death
rate due to heart d i s e a s e
substantially.
In addition, he said some
persons who suffer coronary
artery diseases without clinical
s y m p t o m s can be detected
through screening.
Dr. B e r e n s o n 's remarks
preceded a panel discussion on
"Risk Factor Screening in Coro-nary
Artery Disease."
Also among speakers partici-pating
in the panel discussion
was Dr. J. W. Wilson
Shreveport, outgoing president
of the Louisiana Heart Associa-tion;
Dr. Robert Lafargue, also
of Shreveport; Dr. Charles B.
Moore of New Orleans, and Dr.
W i l l i am M. Luikart, Baton
Rouge.
A s y m p o s i u m for science
teachers on heart disease will
be held at the C o n v e n t i o n
Center Annex at 9 a.m. today.
Dr. Roland Abegg, head of the
department of zoology at Loui-siana
Tech, will preside.
Helen Corbitt, a consultant for
Neiman-Marcus in Dallas, will
speak on "Eat for Your Heart's
Sake" at a noon luncheon.
