A MOVE TO get a four-year
medical college in Shreveport
is definitely under way and
legislation is being prepared to
furnish funds for planning and
study of the proposal, it was re-vealed
today.
Dr. James H. Eddy, president
of the Shreveport Medical So-ciety,
said the medical group
and the staff at Confederate
Memorial Hospital have gone
on record in favor of a four-year
undergraduate medical
school in Shreveport and the
matter has been discussed with
members of the Caddo delega-tion
in the State Legislature
and with a committee of the
Chamber of Commerce.
DR. EDDY, in answer to
questions from a reporter for
The Shreveport Journal, said
he understood the Legislature,
which convenes next Monday,
would be asked to supply
around $40,000 for planning and
study. He said no construc-tion
funds would be asked at
this session of the Legislature.
Cost of a four-year under-graduate
medical school would
be between $5 and $6 million.
The federal government will
supply up to two-thirds of the
total cost, it was said.
A school of this size would
graduate from 50 to 70 medical
students a year. By compari-son,
the freshman class at the
LSU Medical School, this year
numbers around 140.
OR. EDDY said various in-terested
groups who are study-ing
the proposed school are at-tempting
to thrash out a num-ber
of problems. One is wheth-er
the school should be a part
of LSU or whether it should be
autonomous. There appear to
be strong opinions on both sides.
Some fear that LSU might not
wanl to extend its budget to
handle an extra medical school
and that it would be better to
set it up separately. However,
others feel that any medical
school should be a part of a
univerity complex with a strong
science department.
DR. EDDY said Shreveport
was considered a good location
