LSU Shreveport Gets
Tree of Hippocrates
When the first class of the:
Louisiana State University Medi-cal
School at Shreveport gradu-ates,
perhaps it will take the
Oath of Hippocrates beside the
Tree of Hippocrates transplanted
from the Greek Isle of Cos to'
the local school.
The tree arrived here yester-day
via Athens, Rome, New York
and Dallas and it all began,
according to Dr. George Menee-ly,
associate dean and coorriina-tor
for the local medical school,
when his friend Dr. Thomas
Doxiades, personal physician to
the king and queen of Greece,
and head of the Department of
Medicine al the Evangelismos
Medical Center in Athens, decid-ed
to give the local school a gift.
"He had (old me," said Dr.
Meneely, "that he wanted to give
the school one of the trees from
the Grove of Hippocrates."
Dr. Meneely received a letter
from the doctor Tuesday saying
the tree was en route and soon
afterwards he discovered that
the sapling had arrived in
Dallas.
"After much communication
with airline and custom officials,
I wired the airline company
giving them power of attorney,
and the sapling was cleared
through customs. It had pre-viously
been given a certificate
from the Greek minister of
agriculture, and had been ap-proved
by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture," said Dr. Menee-ly.
The Louisiana State University
Red River Valley Experiemental
Station, under the direction of J.
Y. Oakes. professor of agronomy
and superintendent of the station.
has agreed to keep the tree until
it can he planted on the site of
the LSU Medical School, which
will be located on the grounds of
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center.
The five-foot tree was wrapped
in peat moss. It will be planted
at the station, and Oakes said he
plans to do some research on the|
care of the tree.
According to Dr. Meneely the
tree is a part of the sycamore
tree family and has "broad
leaves and a streaky bark that
sheds easily."
Just as the ancient doctor
Hippocrates has been a tradition
to members of the medical
profession for centuries, as the
little sapling grows along with the
giant medical school, it will
become the symbol of friendship
of the Greek doctor and one of
the officials who helped plan a
medical center.
