There is a lack of outpatient
teaching facilities for Louisiana
State University Medical School
at Shreveport, Dr. Edgar Hull,
dean of the school, said last
night.
Dr. Hull said that the school

Administration Hospital. The site
for the building is on the grounds

Center, and the present plans
call for construction of an
outpatient facility, also.
Answers Question
In answer to a question about
the status of the full-time
medical school staff, Dr. Hull
said that it was his feeling that
the staff "not engage in private
practice."
"But," he emphasized, "I
would not want to deny their
special skills to the community."
He pointed out that many
medical school deans do not
agree with him.
There are three reasons for his
philosophy, he said.
He said he feels, if the full
time staff goes into private
practice, "they do not give their
full time to research or teach-ing;"
if you let the staff
subsidize their salaries with
oney from private practice,
"there is no leaverage to
money for the budget;" and "if
you keep the full time staff, full
time, you keep good relations
with the local medical people."
. Approval Expected
Approval of some $12 million in
matching federal. funds for the
school is expected within the
next year, Dr. Hull said.
Explaining that the school was
not funded last year "for a
number of reasons," Dr. Hull
said that he expected approval
within the next year, with
funding by 1971, and completion
of the facility by 1974.
Dr. Hull said that if the school
had been constructed with state
funds only, it would not be as
large as the planned structure.
After outlining the history of
the school and plans for next
year's class, Dr. Hull fielded
questions from the doctors.
In answer to a question about
what would be done with the
medical students until the build-ing
is completed, he said. "We
can easily handle 32 first and
second year students at' the
Veterans Administration Hospi-tal,
(where the first class will
start next year), and 32 third
and fourth year students at
Confederate and the VA."
