Sunday, June 1, 1969 THE SHREVEPORT TIMES Top Men to Appear At Medical Meeting "Closing the Gap Between Medicine and Psychiatry" will be the theme of a Regional Scientific meeting of the Acade-my of Psychosomatic Medicine here Oct. 28 and 24 at Conven-tion Hall. It is being sponsored by the Neuropsychiatric Service of the Veterans Administration Hospital and Louisiana State University School of Medicine at Shreve-port. Dr. Walter Bruschi is chief of the service at the VA. Two of the top guests at the two-day session will be Dr. Raymond W. Waggoner, newly elected president of the Ameri-can Psychiatric Association and director of the Neuropsychiatric Institute at University Hospital, University of Michigan, and Dr. Blaine McLaughlin,. president of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine and chairman' of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Dakota Med-ical School. The purpose of the meeting, said Dr. Bruschi is "to unite the various branches of medicine, and especially to bring psychia-try in closer contact with other specialties." "Psychiatry," he added, "has been isolated, snubbed, misun-derstoor, ignored, and sometimes maligned by other branches of medicine. With this program and others, we hope to bridge this gap." The meeting is also designee'd, he said, to present all the. various facets of "the complex mental diseases — organic as. well as those affecting the psyche." He emphasized that nurses, medical doctors, social wojkers and people in allied fields are urged to attend the session. Dr. Waggoner will deliver the opening address. Top medical men from all over the United States who have accepted the invitation to speak include Dr. Edwin Dunlop; a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, and past president of the Acade-my of Psychosomatic Medicine; Dr. Robert G. Heath, professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and NeurologV at Tulane University School of Medicine; Dr. Adam Krakowski, a native of Poland, and professor in the Department of Medicine and Health Education, Platts-burgh 'late University College, and president-elect of the Acade-my of Psychosomatic Medicine; Dr. Stewart Wolf, research fel-low in medicine, Bellevue Hospi-tal; Dr. Joseph Wolpe, native; of Johannesburg, South Africa, pro-fessor of psychiatry in the De-partment of Behavioral Science, Temple U n i v e r s i t y Medical School; Dr. Wilfred Dorfman, editor-in-chief of "Psychosomat-ics," official journal of the Academy of Psychosomatic Med-icine; and Dr. Jules Masserman, a native of Russia, cochairman of 'psychiatry,, University of Chicago. Other speakers are Dr. Shreve-ert H. Frazier, a native of Shreveport, chairman of the Program Committee for the American Psychiatric Associa-tion and professor of psychiatry, Columbia University, New York City; Dr. Melvin Land, resear-chist in psychosomatic medicine; Dr. Leon Salzman, member of the board of directors of the Washington School of Psychia-try; Dr. John J. Schwab, profes-sor of psychiatry and medicine, University' of Florida; Dr G. G. Rudolph, head of the Department, of Biochemistry at LSU Medical School in Shreveport: Dr. Marion D. Hargrove Jr.. assistant dean of LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport; Dr. Adrian F. Reed, chairman of the Department of Anatomy LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport: Dr. Jose R. M. Delgado, a native of Spain, professor in physiology and psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine; Dr. Richard A. Sternbach, associate professor of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Wisconsin Medical School, Madison, Wise, and Dr. Erwin W. Straus, a native of Germany, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.. Also invited are Dr. Hans Selye, director of the Institute of Experimental Medicine and Sur-gery of the University of Mont-real, and Dr. Karl Menninger, cofounder of the Menninger Foundation, Topeka, Kan.
