Medical Men to Have
Annual Meeting Here
More than 350 physicians and
other medical personnel will
gather at the Captain Shreve
Hotel today and Saturday for
the 1967 annual meeting of
the Louisiana Tuberculosis and
Respiratory Disease Assn., the
Louisiana Thoracic Society and
the Louisiana Chapter of the
American College of Chest
Physicians.
Dr. Walter T. Snow, presi-dent
of the LTRDA and
radiologist at Willis-Knighton
Hospital, said the general-public
health segments of the
meeting will begin with the
showing of two films on air
pollution at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
"The Poisoned Air," a CBS
documentary, and "Beware the
Wind" will be shown and
discussed by G. Arthur Smith,
LTRDA program director.
Miss Lillian Edwards, Loui-siana
State Board of Health
consultant from Monroe, will
preside over the keynote ses-sion
which starts at 1:30 p.m.
J. Irvin Nichols, executive
director of the Michigan Tuber-culosis
Respiratory Disease
Assn., Lansing, Mich., will
speak on "The Future Role of
the Tuberculosis and Respira-tory
Disease Assn."
W. Findley Raymond, execu-tive
director of LTRDA, will
also speak at the afternoon
session. He will be followed by
Dr. Sydney Jacobs, president
of the National Tuberculosis
Assn., New Orleans, speaking
on "The Involvement of Physi-cians
is Essential for the
Eradication of Tuberculosis."
A symposium of reports on
current Louisiana tuberculosis
hospitals will begin at 9 a.m.
Saturday with Dr. Murphy P.
M a r t i n , Iberia-Lafayette-St.
Martin health officer, presid-ing.
Included among those
giving reports on in-patient
facilities for TB patients will
be Dr. Walter W. McCook,
medical director of The Pines
Tuberculosis Sanatorium, and
Dr. John G. Wafer, of the
Shreveport Veterans Adminis-tration
Hospital.
A special guest speaker, Dr.
John Chapman, president of
American Thoracic Society,
Dallas, Tex., will discuss "The
Future of the Tuberculosis
Hospital."
The final session of the
annual meeting will feature
national and state speakers on
air pollution control to be
presided over by Dr. Snow. He
said an invitation has been
ussed to area businessmen to
attend the S a t u r d a y noon
luncheon "due to our belief
they should be keenly interest-ed
in air conservation."
The school press project
awards, the annual Christmas
Seal Campaign achievement
awards and "The Louisiana
Award" — The LTRDA's high-est
honor going this year to an
outstanding Shreveport citizen
— will also be presented at the
luncheon session.
Dr. Morton M. Zisking, presi-dent
of the Louisiana Thoracic
Society, said the opening ses-sion
of the LTS, the medical
section of LTRDA, will begin
at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the
Captain Shreve. Presiding will
be Dr. Morton M. Brown,
chairman for the medical
meeting and program chair-man
for the Thoracic Society.
"Mycotic Lung Infections"
will be discussed by Dr. Alton
Lawton, Shreveport, thoracic
and cardiovascular surgeon.
Dr. George R. Meneely, profes-sor
of medicine and associate
dean of the Shreveport School
of Medicine, will follow with a
;alk on "Preoperative Evalua-tion
and Postoperative Man-agement
of Patients with Pul-monary
Inpairment."
The Saturday morning scien-tific
session will start at 9 a.m.
with Dr. James T. Perret,
president of the Louisiana
Chapter of American College oi
Chest P h y s i c i a n s , Baton
Rouge, presiding. Talks will be
given at the session by Dr
Rozelle Hahn, clinical director
of the department of medicine
at Confederate Memorial Hos
pital, and Dr. James S. Shelby
head of the cardiovascular
service at Confederate Memo
rial.
The committee on qualifica
lions and contract of tht
LTRDA will have a 7 a.m.
breakfast meeting tomorrow
with the board of directors of
the LTRDA meeting from 9
a.m. until noon.
The Northwest Louisiana
TB-RD Assn. will have a board
of directors luncheon at noon
tomorrow and the Louisiana
Chapter of American College oi
Chest Physicians will hold an
election session at 5:45 p.m.
tomorrow.
New officers of the LTS will
be elected at a 7:30 p.m.
banquet session tomorrow.
