To Meet in Shreveport
Symposium Will Cover
Field of Schizophrenia
The top psychiatrists in the
field of schizophrenia will discuss
their ideas on the disease at a
symposium Feb. 5-6 at the
Crystal Ballroom of the Washing-ton
Youree Hotel.
The meeting is being sponsored
by the Veterans Administration
Hospital here and Central State
Hospital in Pineville.
Dr. Walter Bruschi, chief of
the Psychiatry Service at the VA
said that "the most prominent
men in the field will try to coyer
every facet of this illusive
disease."
The topic was chosen he said
"because of the urgency of the
problem."
"It is," he added "in psychia-try
comparable to the study of
cancer in medicine."
Dr. Sanford Cohen, of the
Department of Psychiatry, at
Louisiana State University Medi-cal
School in New Orleans, will
serve as moderator for the
three-day program.
Dr. Silvano Arieta, professor of
psychiatry at New York Univer-sity,
who is known for his study
of art and creativity, will discuss
"Psychotherapy of Schizophre-nia,"
"The Art of 'the Schizo-phrenic,"
and "Psychodynamics
of Schizophrenia: A reconsidera-tion."
The editor in chief ot "Psycho-somatics,"
the official journal of
the Academy of Psychosomatic
Medicine, and past president of
the Academy, Dr. Wilfred Dorf-man
of Brooklyn, N.Y., will
discuss the "Chemotherapy of
Schizophrenia. Dr. Dorman is
well known 'lor his study of
drugs.
Professor emeritus of Psychia-try
at Harvard University, Dr.
Harry C. Soloman, who is known
for surgery on the frontal lob
will speak at the symposium, as
will Dr. Robert C. Prall of
Merion Station, Pa., who has
done extensive work with schizo-phrenic
children.
An expert in community psy-chiatry
Dr. Leopold Bellak of
Long island, N.Y., will speak
and a member of the staff of Dr.
Robert Heath, of Tulane Univer-sity
Medical School who takes
the position that schizophrenia is
organic, will also participate.
Dr. Gaetano Benedetti who
teaches psychotherapy at the
University of Basel, has been
invited to the meeting.
Dr- Albert Moraczewski of the)
Institute of Religion at Houston,
Tex., will deliver a paper on
"Theological Pharmacology."
and the Rev. Joseph Scherer,
dormer chaplain at the VA, and
now a student in clinical psychol-ogy
at the University of Texas at
Houston, will speak.
Dr. Edgar Hull, dean of
Louisiana State University Merii-
"cal School at Shrevenort. has
been invited to give the opening
address.
Medical personnel from Loui-siana,
Texas and Arkansas are
being invited to the three-day
meeting.
