Area Committee Named
Medical School Opening
Date Moved Up a Year
By CAROL HAWK
Of The Times Staff
The expected opening date of the Shreveport Branch
of the LSU Medical School was moved up one year
and members of a new committee to work in develop-ment
of the school were announced yesterday by Dr.
William Frye of New Orleans, chancellor of the LSU
Medical Center.
While an earlier announcement
during a talk in Shreveport by
Gov. John McKeithen had set
opening date of the school in
191ft), Dr. Frye yesterday said
that earliest occupancy of the
school would be "in the area of"
the 1969-1970 school year.
Closing a preliminary planning
session in which he met with
committees and studied maps and
plans of Confederate Memorial
Hospital and the surrounding
area, Dr. Frye named the mem-bers
of the LSU-Shreveport Med-ical
School Advisory Committee
which will work with LSU offi-cials
in setting up a medical
school branch here.
The committee will be headed
by Dr. Joe Holoubek, who was
also chairman of the Shreveport

medical and paramedical courses
and is planned to be a major re-search
and study center. in the
area. Dr. Frye said that the pro-jected
student load was 100 med-ical
students per year and that
1,200 to 1,500 new jobs would be
created by the operation of the
school.
The facility is proposed to be
located near or on the .grounds
of Confederate Memorial Hospi-tal,'
with which the new med-ical
school will work closely be-cause
it is a state-supported in-stitution.
Dr. Frye met yesterday with
members of the curriculum, con-struction,
survey and finance
committees of the local medical
school group.
He said that the Shreveport
school has the complete support
Medical Society committee for of LSU President John Hunter
the development of the school.
Dr. Charles Black is vice chair-man.
The committee is made up of
representatives from North Lou-isiana
parishes, one representa-tive
from South Arkansas and
three from East Texas.
Dr. Frye said that a local dean
would be appointed as soon as a
bill asking $5 million for con-struction
of the school here is
passed in the upcoming state leg-islature—
he hoped by early fall.
He said he also hoped to appoint
an administrative officer to as-sist
the dean and an authority
in basic science to help develop
the first two years of the school's
curriculum.
The LSU chancellor said he
would be in Chicago, 111., today
to meet with the American Med-ical
Association Council, the As-sociation
of American Medical
Colleges and deans of other med-ical
schools to get advice on the
Shreveport school.
and that Dr. Edgar Hull, assoc-ate
dean of the School of Medi-cine
in New Orleans, will begin
to make regular visits here to
work with the committee on its
teaching program.
"It will take time because we
want to coordinate the school
with the entire hospital," he
said.
The building of the basic fa-cility—
including classroom space
and laboratory facilities—will cost
a minimum of $10 million with
funds to come from the state and
matching funds from the federal
government, he said.
The chancellor commended the
"enthusiastic attitude" of Shreve-porters
in seeking the medical
school and said that, it had been
a ' real community effort."
