Medical Center Board
Discusses Brick Color
There was a strange item on
the agenda printed for Confeder-ate
Memorial Medical Center
Board of Directors meeting last
night: "Color of brick for the
outpatient department."
It seems that although the
hole is b e i n g dug for the
foundation of the $1.3 million
facility no one has picked out
the color of the brick.
Gen. Spencer Hardy logically
suggested that it be the same
color as the existing facility,
white brick.
But Board Chairman T. B.
Lanford and Dr. Edgar Gallo-way
pooh-poohed that idea ex-plaining
that the architects say
it couldn't be done, that you
can't get the same color be-cause
of weathering effects on
the old brick.
"They matched the bricks
when they remodeled the court-house,"
said Tony Pernici.
"Why don't you just trust the
architect?" asked LSU Medical
School Dean Dr. Edgar Hull.
But Lanford said he didn't
think the board should decide
until someone sat down and
looked at the brick, and Hardy
said, "Yes, some architects are
colorblind."
Alter a general discussion as
to whether or not the outpatient
building should be the same
color brick as the medical
school which is being construct-ed
on the Confederate grounds,
the matter was turned over to a
committee consisting of Hardy,
Dr. Andrew Mullen and Gallo-way.
What color is the brick in the
medical school (which is being
constructed at a cost of $30
million) The Times asked Dr.
leorge Meneelv, associate dean
at the school and who has
supervised the facility's design.
"I don't know," he answered
with a laugh. "But I'll find out
'or you."
A check with the architect
showed, Meneely said that "the
brick will be essentially the
same color. They will avoid
getting a matching shade. But
the brick will be similar in
color. Just say a darker shade
of the same hue!"
