Bond Issue Authorized—
Senate Approves Funds For
Graduate Medical School
By CHARLES C. PHILLIPS, Journal Staff Member
BATON ROUGE—The proposed post graduate medical
school at Shreveport got Senate approval Tuesday morning
as did a $280,000 appropriation for the Louisiana State Fair
The Upper House, at the request
of Sen. Charles E. Tooke of Caddo
added an amendment to a Charity
Hospital measure would make
available $1,800,000 for the proposed
medical school at Shreveport.
The bill, Tooke explained, would
permit the Louisiana State Building
Authority to issue bonds on the
amount of $3,025,000 for capital out-lay.
The $1,800,000 for the post
graduate school would come out of
this total.

Rogers Dissents.
The vote on the bill was 31 to 1.
The lone dissenter was Sen. B. H.
(Johnny) Rogers of DeSoto Parish.
Rogers said later that he was not
opposed to the school, but that he
had consistently voted against all
bond issues.
Senator Tooke said that estab-lishment
of the school, to be built
at Confederate Memorial Medical
Center, had the approval of Presi-dent
Troy Middleton of LSU and of
the head of the LSU Medical De-partment
of which it would be a
part.
"This bill," Sen. Tooke said," is
of particular interest to physicians
in North Louisiana and it will en-able
them to periodically bring
themselves up to date on new
medical developments.
The post graduate school, will
offer short courses on current
medical topics ranging from one
day to one year in length, the sen-ator
said.

Research Center.
In addition the school will offer
courses for medical students and
also it will have a research de-partment
to be operated by stu-dents
on fellowships. Instruction
will be given by the staff a Con-federate
Memorial, however a paid
physician will be required to head
the Research Department it was
pointed out.
Grants in air for research will
amount to more than half a million
dollars a year and will come from
drug concerns and others interested
in research.
The bill, with Senator Tooke's
amendment must now go to the
House of Representatives for action
and then to the governor for his
signature.
