Watson seeks $13.8 million
for shooting incident damages
Former Shreveport Police Of-ficer
M.E. "Gene" Watson has filed
five lawsuits in Caddo District Court
for $13.8 million in damages for the
shooting incident in which he was
wounded.
Watson was shot while on duty
March 2,1982. He had stopped at the
7-Eleven convenience store at Jack-son
and Jewella when he was ap-proached
from behind by a man who
grabbed Watson's service revolver,
shooting the officer several times.
Robert Pettaway was found guil-ty
of attempted first-degree murder
for the assault on Watson. Pet-taway's
attorney maintained
throughout the trial that his client
was insane at the time of the offense.
According to the suits, Watson
suffered injuries to his abdomen,
chest, arm and internal organs. The
officer also has suffered psychologi-cal
damage as a result of the shoot-ing
incident, the suits claim.
In one of the suits filed Tuesday,
Watson sued the psychiatrists, the
Shreveport Mental Health Center
and LSU Hospital for not providing
adequate medical treatment and
supervision for his assailant, Pet-taway.
Watson has asked for $3.8
million in damages.
Watson also sued the psychiatrists
— Dr. Norman Mauroner and Dr.
Ann Arretteig — on behalf of his
children and asked for $1.04 million
in damages.
The former officer also sued
Brauer Brothers Manufacturing
Co., the manufacturers of the
holster he was wearing on the day of
the incident. According to the suit,
the holster was defective, allowing
Pettaway to take Watson's service
revolver. That suit seeks $3.8
million in damages.
Brauer Brothers was also named
as a defendant in a lawsuit on behalf
of the Watson children.
