Medical Center To
Change Its Billing
In a move to meet Blue Cross Insur-ance
Company's criteria for determin-ing
hospital rates, Bossier Medical Cen-ter
will no longer provide a billing
s e r v i c e for radiologists or
anesthesiologists beginning Jan. 1.
Blue Cross had recently identified
Bossier Medical Center as a hospital
whose rates were higher than average,
along with Highland Hospital and
Schumpert Hospital in Shreveport.
The company was asking those hospi-tals
to sign a new contract, effective
Oct. 1. The contract would force the
hospitals to give them a discount based
on the amount the hospital was over the
average.
Bossier Medical Center Adminis-trator
David Beach said the hospital's
revenue was erroneously computed by
the company, since it included charges
from the hospital's billing system.
The hospital does not get revenue
from services rendered by
anesthesiologists or radiologists, he
said. The hospital provides a billing
service for the physicians, deducts a
portion for handling and forward the
rest of the money to the doctors.
But beginning Jan. 1, that service will
stop — a measure that will cause some
problems for Bossier Medical Center
patients, Beach said.
Where in the past the patient received
only one bill, if the patient had any
surgery or had X-ray work, he will
receive three bills.
In making the motions to do away
with the services, Dr. Clinton McAlister
said he thought it was a good idea to
"get out of the billing business" anyway.
Three other hospitals in the
Shreveport-Bossier area have recently
switched to separate billing, Beach said,
in an apparent move to lower its reven-ue
figures to meet Blue Cross' criteria.
Beach said the hospital board had
written a letter to Blue Cross, explain-ing
what they feel are errors in Blue
Cross' figures.
No action will be taken on the con-tract
before more information is re-ceived
from Blue Cross, Beach said.
