medical beat Tech to sponsor nutrition series By SALLY REESE Times Medical Writer A 10-part series on sources and roles of vitamins and minerals in nutrition will begin Dec. 9 at Louisi-ana Tech University in Ruston. "What's New With Non-Calorie Nutrients" will be sponsored by the College of Home Economics and the Division of Continuing Education. Participating dieti-tians will qualify for two continuing education units per session. The two-hour sessions will be held in Room 153 of Carson-Taylor Hall, each beginning at 7 p.m., on Dec. 9 and 16; Jan. 6, 13, 20, and 27; and Feb. 3,10,17 and 24. Some of the topics are "In and Out of You," "Four Bs and Some Helpers for Energy Release," "Water and Its Cronies," and "Fact and Fiction About the 'Miracle Workers." The fee is $10 per session or $85 for the entire series. Deadline for advance registration is Dec. 4. Checks snould be made payable to the Division of Continuing Education, Louisiana Tech, P.O. Box 3182, Ruston, La. 71272. Participants can also register at the door. Research grant Dr. Christopher C.K. Leung of LSU Medical Center has been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to continue his research on birth defects. The $198,879 grant covers a three-year period. Leung, a professor of anatomy in the medical school, is making a study of abnormal embryonic development. In another research project, "Embryonic Placental Antisera," he is exploring the role of antibodies in the etiology of birth defects. CPR A three-hour course in cardiopulmonary resuscita-tion will be given by the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and American Heart Association Dec. 3 at 3401 North Market St. It will begin at 7 p.m.
