Great American Smokeout
Smokers in Caddo and Bossier parishes are
being urged to pledge a day of freedom from
cigarettes, cigars and pipes on Thursday as
part of the American Cancer Society's fifth
annual Great American Smokeout. Calhoun
Allen, Smokeout chairman for the two par-ishes,
said, "We ask people to try to give up
their cigarette habit for just 24 hours. If they
make it through the day, they may try one
more day, and possibly quit for good."
A survey conducted after the 1980 Great
American Smokeout showed that about 5
million cigarette smokers did not smoke at all
on the day of the Smokeout, and about 2.2
million still were not smoking one to 10 days
later.
Anyone interested in signing a pledge card
can contact members of the following groups:
St. Joseph's life science class, student councils
at Byrd High Sciool, Bossier High School and
Woodlawn Higlf School, Captain Shreve In-teract,
the education departments of Willis-
Knighton Medical Center; Bossier Medical
Center, Doctor's Hospital and Schumpert
Medical Center, or call the American Cancer
Society at 227-8901.
Stop Smoking Contest Winner _
Diane Richter of Haughton is the local
winner of the Larry Hagman Stop Smoking
Contest, the Caddo-Bossier Unit of the Ameri-can
Cancer Society has announced. Her win-ning
suggestion on how to stop smoking was to
sign an agreement with a friend not to smoke
for a year, and further sign a check for 30
percent of your yearly salary made out to
your most unfavorite charity and leave it with
a friend to be forwarded if you smoke.
The top five finalists included, in addition to
Mrs. Richter, Grace Kellner, Bossier City;
Ann Nelson, Castor; Rogers Prestridge, Boss-ier
City; and Martha Pickett, Bossier City.
Mrs. Richter's entry went on to be first
runner-up in the state.
Parenthood Classes Expanded
Schumpert Medical Center's "Preparing
for Parenthood" classes have expanded to
include a new topic, "Emotions in Pregnan-cy,"
for couples planning to have babies in the
hospital. The class will be presented by local
psychiatrist Lucretia A. Little, M.D., once
every three months, beginning Tuesday, Nov.
24, and will address the positive and negative
emotional reactions to changes in body image.
The use of self-hypnosis for pain relief will be
discussed, and participants will be given in-formation
on postpartum blues versus the
more serious postpartum depression.
"Preparing for Parenthood" classes are
designed to complement information given to
expectant parents by their attending physi-cian.
