LSU Med Center '82
renovation starting
By SALLY REESE
Times Medical Writer
LSU Medical Center will have $34
million in capital improvements under
way in 1982 with the startup on six
major renovation projects this spring,
Dean Perry G. Rigby said Tuesday.
This capital outlay encompasses the
$24 million, 11-story wing already un-der
construction, the dean said in a
press conference announcing plans for
getting the renovation and mod-ernization
projects under way.
Dr. Rigby said the medical center
will begin this month to clear the way
f o r r e m o d e l i n g its
burn/trauma/emergency unit, dietary
department, outpatient area,
ophthalmology clinic and J Wing, which
contains about half of LSU Hospital's
475 patient beds.
All projects will be under way by
August and will be completed in 1983,
he said.
The work will require relocating and
doubling up for outpatient clinics in
order that they might continue to func-tion
in the meantime, and Rigby said
these preliminary preparations will be-gin
on Feb. 19.
One of the first moves will be to close
a part of J Wing in order to relocate the
ophthalmology clinic and part of the
pediatrics clinic there during construc-tion.
Rigby said this will require taking
some beds out of service in the wing.
In March, several clinics will be mov-ing
into other existing space, some to
share quarters with the family medi-cine
clinic in the A Building of the
medical complex, the dean said. Among
them are obstetrics-gynecology, or-thopedic
and part of pediatrics.
The renovation of J Wing is scheduled
to begin in the summer. Rigby said it is'
to be remodeled two floors at a time so
that a significant portion of the wing
will be closed during the capital im-provement
program.
The dean said LSU Medical Center
will be in "tight times in terms of
outpatient and inpatient service" dur-ing
the construction period but "we're
fortunate to have remodeling and con-struction
funds to improve patient care
facilities and services."
Funds for these projects have been
appropriated by the state Legislature
over the past three years.
