LSU medical students — Health Fair '82 needs
YOU!
That was the message from Lynda Zionts, Health
Fair director, to students at the LSU Medical
School in Shreveport yesterday.
Health Fair '82 is expected to screen aprox-imately
6,000 people in several area sites April
19-24. Each site will offer five basic screenings —
height, weight, blood pressure, anemia and vision.
In addition, there will be an optional $8 blood
chemistry screening which will cover a variety of
tests. (The money is to cover cost of the tests only.)
The fair is being sponsored by The Times in
association with the Northwest Chapter of the
American Red Cross and the National Health
Screening Council for Volunteer Organizaations
Inc. of Bethesda, Md.
Hundreds of community service agenices and
organizations are expected to cooperate in the
event.
It was in that community spirit that McDonald's
Hamburgers Bates, 3009 Linwood Ave., gave the
Quarterpounders and fried pies that the medical
students munched on as they talked about the fair
— and volunteered to work.
Gil Caillouet, a third year student was named
chairman of the Medical Student Planning Com-mittee.
That committee will coordinate efforts at
the school, and will filter information from the
students to the Steering Committee.
Also named to the committee were Jeff A.
Johnson, Carol R. Ridenour, Dennis Parks, Richard
Ballard, Ron Taylor, Keri Hodges and Scott Cass-ingham.
Mrs. Zionts told the students that they were
needed to draw blood for tests, help get histories at
registration for referral and counseling, and in
May to get back to participants who need further
attention.
"What is the Health Fair?" was a question Mrs.
Zionts posed and answered herself: "Education, to
sum it up in one world. To help us take care of
ourselves, for better health."
Generally, the students were enthusiastic about
the fair.
Caillouet said his interest in it is personal — "I
was very fortunate to be able to come to medical
school. The least I can do is something for the
community."
Ballard said that this would be an opportunity
for the students to get out of the school's halls of ivy
into the community for practical experience.
R.B. Taylor feels the program will give him an
opportunity to assist in preventive medicine — "if
we catch someone 25 to 30 with hypertension, we
can do something to help them."
The Health Fair — it's for the community.
Medical students say they will be there.
