Probe of cocaine arrest continues
By DONNA O'NEAL
Journal Staff Writer
The 52-year-old head of the urology
department at LSU Medical Center
posted bond and was released from
Caddo Parish Jail Monday after he was
arrested at a West Shreveport truck
stop Sunday and booked into jail on a
charge of distribution of cocaine, Caddo
deputies said.
Meanwhile, officials at the medical
school today said they are continuing
their own investigation into the arrest
of the professor, who has been placed on
sick leave under the care of a physician
pending completion of LSU's investiga-tion.
Dr. A. Colin Markland of 1648 Dilg
League Drive was released after post-ing
a $15,000 bond Monday. He and
another man, Donald M. Dreeson, 32, of
Downey, Calif., were arrested at Kelly's
Truck Stop off Interstate 20 near the
Greenwood Road exit Sunday night,
deputies said.
Dreeson was booked with possession
of a controlled dangerous substance.
Maj. J.W. Jones said Deputy Jay
Wright was patrolling Kelly's Truck
Stop at the Greenwood Road exit off
Interstate 20 Sunday night when
Markland approached him and told the
deputy his car had been broken into.
The deputy found four empty bottles
containing traces of cocaine and a half-filled
bottle of Demerol, a powerful
pain-killer, in Markland's car, Jones
said.
Capt. Jim Byrd, head of the sheriff's
Intelligence Division, said Markland
had been visiting Dreeson, who was
staying at the truck stop's Mid-Conti-nent
Inn.
Dr. Perry G. Rigby, acting dean at
LSU, said today the medical school will
continue to look into Markland's arrest.
"We need to look into the matter and
make sure what we do is cor-rect
... We're certainly considering ac-tion,
steps," he said, adding that med
school officials are maintaining con-tacts
with law enforcement authorities.
Markland's duties at the med school
include patient care in the hospital,
administrative duties, classroom
education and research.
A narcotics agent at the Shreveport
Police Department — which had in-vestigated
a report from Markland last
week that his house had been burglar-ized
of some drugs — said police are
looking at the possibility the drugs de-puties
confiscated from the professor's
car Sunday may have come from the
med school.
