Medical Briefs
Pulmonary Medicine Update
The departments of medical educa-tion
and pulmonary medicine at Schum-pert
Medical Center will sponsor a
pulmonary medicine update Friday,
8:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m., in the hospital
auditorium. Registration will be at 8:15
a.m.
Guest speaker Roger C. Bone, M.D.,
professor of medicine, University of
Arkansas for Medical Science, and
chief, pulmonary division, University of
Arkansas Medical Center-Little Rock,
will give an update on respiratory fail-ure
and lead an open discussion on
dealing with the problems of non-responsive
pneumonias.
Local faculty will include David M.
Caskey Jr., M.D., cardiologist and
clinical assistant professor of
pharmacology, LSU School of Medicine,
Shreveport; Ronald B. George, MD
professor of medicine and chief,
pulmonary section, LSU School of Medi-cine,
and chief of medicine, VA Medical
Center, Janice J. Gunnels, M.D., and
Loyd G. Whitley, M.D., pulmonologists,
Schumpert Medical Center and clinical
assistant professors of medicine, LSU
School of Medicine.
Other topics to be discussed include
an update on pulmonary emboli, the
pros and cons of the effectiveness of
basic pulmonary rehabilitation, the use
of new and old bronchodilators and a
comparison of the primary, secondary
and tertiary generations of antibiotics.
Rozelle Hahn, M.D., director, medical
education/administration will open the
seminar and Melvin Johnson Jr., M.D.,
and Raymond P. Cush, M.D., will serve
as moderators for the program. The
CME activity is accredited for five
hours, category I, AMA Physicians Rec-ognition
Award, and application has
been made for five prescribed hours to
the American Academy of Family Phy-sicians.
