Med Center will oversee
medical communications
LSU Medical Center became the communica-tions
control center for the Emergency Medical
Services—system in a 10-parisn area ot Norm
Louisiana Tuesday night.
In this capacity it will transmit instructions to
emergency medical technicians for treatment on
the scene or en route to a hospital.
Thus, EMTs will know where to call for help in
cases where physician referral or patient choice
do not prevail.
The hospital also was designated the regional
poison control center for the area.
Action was by the facilities committee of the
Emergency Medical Services Foundation in a
meeting at the Chateau Motor Hotel.
The committee also approved guidelines for
transfer of seven types of critical-care patients:
neonatal, cardiac, trauma, burn, poison, spinal
cord injury and behavorial cases.
It also agreed to categorize hospitals, in the
critical care areas, according to their response
capabilities.
This was done following a recommendation by
Robert E. DeBacker, associate administrator of
Schumpert Medical Center.
DeBacker said he proposed this in the capacity
of president of the Northwest District of Louisiana
Hospital Association, "of which the Shreveport
and Bossier City hospitals are members."
It also was his group who recommended that
communications control for instructions to EMTs
in the field be housed at LSU Medical Center.
Presiding at the meeting were Bob Poulovich,
chairman, and Dr. Dennis Whitfield, medical
advisor to the EMS Foundation.
Lawrence McKenzie, director of the foundation,
and administrators of Bossier City and most
Shreveport hospitals were there.
