Journal Staff Writer
A woman involved in a grinding
auto collision late Thursday night
while en route to the maternity
ward of a local hospital gave birth
to a baby girl at the scene of the
accident.
Melissa Nell Owens and her Im-pound,
2-ounce daughter both
were doing fine this morning at
LSU Medical Center. The 18-year-old
Coushatta woman gave birth
two blocks east of her final desti-nation
— the hospital.
Shreveport police said Mrs.
Owens, from Coushatta, was
being driven to LSU Hospital
when her auto was hit broadside
at the intersection of Linwood and
Claiborne avenues.
Five persons were injured in
the wreck, none critically.
Ms. Owens, who was in labor,
gave birth while lying in the heav-ily
damaged car at the scene of
the accident, with Shreveport po-lice
and bystanders acting as mid-wives.
Traffic was stopped on Linwood
and Claiborne as officers gave
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to
the newborn, who was not breath-ing.
After the infant began breath-ing
it was taken two blocks down
the street to LSU Medical Center.
Meanwhile, the driver of the
other vehicle, Wilfriede Emge, 62,
of 231 E. Linden was thrown from
the car. She was taken to Schum-
