Top Psychiatrists
To Attend Meeting
At Convention Hall

Of The Times Staff
Some of the nation's top
psychiatrists and researchists
will be among the speakers
participating in a meeting "Clos-
|ing the Gap Between Medicine
and Psychiatry," Thursday and
Friday at Convention Hall.
Included among the speakers
are top officials in leading
medical groups in the United
States.
The meeting is being cospon-sored
by the Neuropsychiatric
Service at the Veterans Adminis-tration
Hospital and the Louisia-na
State University School of
Medicine in Shreveport. It is
being presented by the Academy
of Psychosomatic Medicine.
Dr. Walter C. Bruschi, chief of
psychiatry at the VA Hospital is
chairman of the program com-mittee,
with Dr. Ike Muslow,
director of medicine at Confeder-ate
Memorial Medical Center
serving as cochairman.
Activities coordinators are Dr.
Norman Mauroner, psychiatrist
at the VA, and Dr. Edward"
Leatherman, senior resident at
Confederate.
Topics at the two-day session
will range from the anatomy and
physiological chemistry of the
"visceral brain" to the existen-tial
and phcnomenological di-mensions
of the human mind,
according to Dr. Bruschi.
"The eminent scientists and
scholars who have accepted to
participate wii'. guide us closet to
a unified theory of disease.
"This meeting is also intended
to advance the main objective of
the academy: to increase the
awareness that psychosomatic
medicine means total, compre-hensive
medicine. By undercut
ting the mind-body dichotomy.
psy'phosotnatic medicine restores
the art of the healing the whole
person at any time and under all
fcircumstances," added Dr. Brus-
Ehi.
Giving the opening address at
9:20 a.m. Thursday will be Dr.
[Raymond Waggoner, president of
the American Psychiatric Asso-ciation
and chairman and profes-sor
of psychiatry and director of
the Neuropsychiatric Institute at.
the University of Michigan Medi-cal
Center.
