LSU Medical Center closes
two wards for renovations
LSU Medical Center had fewer beds
in service this week after closing two
wards in its J Wing in preparation for
remodeling outpatient clinics.
Dean Perry G. Rigby said about 50
beds have been taken out of service so
the wards can be converted to tem-porary
quarters of some of the outpa-tient
clinics..As a result, LSU Hospital
had 450 beds in service Tuesday, he
said.
In the next two weeks, the medical
center will be relocating four clinics to
make way for remodeling the outpa-tient
area as part of the $34 million in
capital improvements it will have in the
works this year. The chief component of
these capital improvements is the $24
million 11-story wing which, among
other things, will bring LSU Hospital up
to its licensed bed capacity of 650.
The ophthalmology clinic and part of
the pediatrics clinic will be relocated in
J Wing pending renovation of the clinic
area, which is expected to begin in the
summer. Nurses on the two wards
closed for that purpose will be assigned
to other patient care floors.
In April or May, Rigby said, patients
will start seeing signs of relocation of
services as LSU Medical Center moves
into one of its several renovation
projects.
