LSU Med School Officials Confer
Officials of Louisiana State
University and Sam Wciner,
architect fnr the new $30 mil-lion
medical school to be estab-lished
here, met at noon today
at Confederate Memorial Medi-cal
Center to discuss procress in
the planning for the LSU Medi-cal
School here.
The group included Dr. John
Hunter of Baton Rouse, presi-dent
of LSU; Dr. M a r t i n D.
Woodin of Baton Rouge, execu-tive
vice president of LSU; Dr.
William W. Frye of New Or-leans,
chancellor of the LSU
Medical Center; Dr. Edgar Hull
of New Orleans, associate dean
of the LSU Medical Center, and
Dr. George Meneely of Shreve-port,
coordinator for develop-ment
of plans and program for
the new medical school.
DR. FRYE SAID the group
would be briefed on the status
of a p p l i c a t i o n s for federal
matching funds for the new
medical school here which is
scheduled to be opened for
the 1969-70 academic year.
LSU has filed a letter of in-tent
with its application for
federal funds, Dr. Frye said.
The letter includes the state-ment
that LSU will provide a
fully developed plan for the
medical school here within the
next few months.
He said Dr. Menccly has been
to Washington, D.C., to confer
with federal officials on pro-gram
needs for the new school,
which Dr. Frye said would "be
in the position shortly to begin
looking for personnel in the
basic s c i e n c e s and clinical
areas."
ADDITIONAL STEPS to be
taken on financing the new med-ical
school and implementation
of the bond issue approved in
this year's regular session of
the Legislature will be dis-cussed
at the next meeting of
the LSU Board of Supervisors
on Aug. 5, Dr. Frye said.
Dr. Frye was high in his
praise of the work done by local
physicians in gathering infor-mation
on medical schools and
programs, pointing out that
"considerable time has been
saved and will be saved in the
future because of the work al-ready
done by Shreveport doc-tors
and citizens."
