Perinatal care
conference set
"Perinatal Health Care - the '80s, a two-day
conference for registered nurses, is
scheduled for March 13-14 by Northwestern
State University College of Nursing and Willis-
Knighton Medical Center.
Dr. Peggy L. Chinh, registered nurse and
editor of Advances in Nursing Science, will be
one of the principal speakers. Her topic will be
"A Challenge to Nursing: Perinatal Care in the
!80s."
Perinatal care relates to the period shortly
before and after childbirth. It is a major factor in
the dramatic decrease in deaths of newborns and
marked improvement in the well-being of sur-vivors.
Nursing's concerns in practice, education
and research in the field will be covered in
general sessions and mini-workshops at Willis-
Knighton Medical Center.
Subjects included are the high-risk newborn,
breastfeeding, the future fate of the foreskin,
Childbirth education myth and fact, nurse
midwifery, adolescent pregnancy, ethical con-siderations
in transcultural nursing, and family-centered
maternal-newborn care.
Keynote speakers are Dr. Chinn; Dr. Daniel
A. Rightmire, director of maternal-fetal
medicine at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport;
Dr. Horace E. Thompson, chairman of LSUMC
department of gynecology and obstetrics; Dr.
Phyllis Stern, professor and coordinator of the
maternal-child-family nursing master's pro-
?ram at NSU College of Nursing; and Dr. Po-I-Seng,
director of neonatology at Willis-
Knighton Medical Center.
General sessions will begin at 8 a.m. in the
Willis-Knighton auditorium on both days. Dr.
Chinn will address the first, at 9 a.m. March 13,
and Dr. Stern will address the second, at 8:30
a.m. March 14. Dr. Stern's subject will be
transcultural nursing, ethical considerations.
Workshops will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
the first day and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. the second.
Nurses will have a choice of two.
