BATON ROUGE - Funds for plan-ning
a new LSUS administration build-ing
and for completing the Linwood
Apartments for students, residents and
faculty at Shreveport's LSU Medical
Center are included in the state con-struction
budget which Gov. Dave
Treen will unveil later today.
The $400,000 for planning the admin-istration
building, which LSUS has been
requesting since 1974, are being in-cluded
this year, Treen said, because
"this project was moved up the priority
list provided me by the (state) Board of
Regents."
In announcing that he has finally
decided to fund the LSUS adminis-tration
building, the governor said there
is "a glaring need" to centralize the
school's administrative services.
"Presently, the central adminis-trative
staff of the university is housed
in three different buildings, one a tem-porary
building. Inefficient space, de-centralization
of business services and
physical and fire security problems
have deemed the present situation in-adequate,"
Treen said, pointing out that
he plans to recommend $4.35 million
next year to construct the facility.
The Linwood project, which received
planning funds in the 1981-82 budget,
will get $15,085,000 to construct the
planned 400 apartments with a student
union, meeting and conference rooms,
Treen said noting the state expects to
recoup its money from rental fees to be
collected on the property.
The medical center, the governor
said, also will receive another $1.43
million for the Burn and Trauma Unit,
$2 million to fund equipment for the
teaching hospital, $960,000 to renovate
the Dietary Unit and $360,000 for reno-vating
the Nursing School.
