Berg awarded grant
for cancer research
The American Cancer Society has awarded a
$55,000 basic research grant to Dr. Rodney D. Berg to
sppport his work at LSU Medical Center in
Shreveport.
Berg is an associate professor of bacteriology and
immunology in the school of medicine.
He is studying bacterial infections in cancer
patients who receive chemotherapy and antibiotics.
Chemotherapy suppresses their natural immune
system, and antibiotics disrupt the bacterial ecology
of their gastrointestinal tracts, said a spokesman for
the medical school.
Berg's project is entitled "Bacterial Transloca-tion
from the Gastrointestinal Tract as a Primary
Mechanism of Infection in the Immunosuppressed
Cancer Patient."
His goal is to shed light on mechanisms whereby
spppression of the cancer patient's immune response
by chemotherapy can cause infection by bacteria
normally residing in the patient's intestines.
; The ACS grant is for one year.
