BATON ROUGE (AP) - The backlog of unpaid
Mrdicaid claims to health care providers is about
'cleared up, state Secretary of Health and Human
Resources George Fischer told a group of legislators
Tuesday.
The Computer Company, hired in January to proc-ess
the claims, has been under fire for several months
from doctors, hospitals, pharmacists and other health
care providers. They charge TCC, which has been
fined $100,000 this year, is slow in making the
Medicaid reimbursement payments and have lost
some claims.
Meanwhile, a member of a special House-Senate
committee looking into the problem has told legisla-tors
he will ask the state to cancel the contract with
TCC.
Fischer was asked about the backlog as he testified
before the Joint Legislative Budget Committee.
He said about $43 million in back payments was
owed at one time but that is now "down to about $1
million or $2 million."
In a related matter Fischer told the committee due
to federal budget cuts the Legislature — preferrably
in the special session next month — must cough up $10
million in state funds or Louisiana's Medicaid pro-gram
will have to be cut back by $29 million.
