Special Luncheon
Meeting Planned Oct. 20
On Medical School Here
Plans for the LSU-Shrevrpnrt
Medical School will be discussed
at a special luncheon on Wednes-day.
Oct. 20, hosted by the Shreve-port
Medical Society and the
Shreveport Chamber of Com-merce.
Guests at the luncheon will be
Dr. John Hunter. LSU president.
Dr. William Fry, chancellor of
LSU Medical Center. Dr. Grover
Murray, vice president of aca-demic
affairs, and Dr. Edgar
Hull, associate dean of the LSU-New
Orleans Medical School.
The guests, who are expected
to arrive at 9 a.m. from Baton
Rouge, will spend the morning
touring the Confederate Memorial
Hospital. The grounds which
house the 1,000-bed charity hos-pital
have been selected as the
site for the proposed construction
of a medical school which could
accommodate 400 medical stu-dents.
Dr. Joe Holoubek. general
chairman of the local medical
school planning committee, said
that doctors who have surveyed
other medical schools during the
summer along with the chairmen
of the committees on curriculum,
construction, and design, funds
and finance and liaison, would re-port
on their progress following
the luncheon.
Several members of the volun-teer
study committees have ex-pressed
hope that LSU will pro-vide
leadership which could use
the information they have gath-ered
in a definite plan to expedite
the medical school development.
MEDICAL SCHOOL
The building of the new medi-cal
school will be a major leap
forward in the growth of Shreve-port
as a medical center.
The Shreveport Charity Hos-pital,
created by a legislative act
of 1876. was located at the corner
of Ford and Pierre streets. In
1889. a new building was built at
Murphy and Texas. The resi-dency
program for young doctors
began in 1940 and, in 1955 the
Confederate Memorial Hospital
was built at Kings Highway and
Linwood.
Many civic leaders remember
the setback suffered in 1956 when,
following the groundbreaking at
Confederate Memorial for an LSU
postgraduate School of Medicine,
funds appropriated for construc-tion
were withdrawn by the state.
Local legislators hope that the
necessary funds for construction
of the new medical school are
appropriated during Gov. Mc-
Keithen's term of office, since
