The pancreas transplanted in a
Shreveport woman's thigh on Feb. 28 at
LSU Medical Center was removed
Wednesday, and the success of the
kidney transplant performed at the
same time was in doubt Thursday.
The patient was back in the surgery
intensive care unit Thursday, and her
physician, Dr. Stephen T. Brown, said
her condition was guarded.
The big question now is the fate of the
kidney transplant, Brown said. There is
some evidence that the kidney is not
working well, and the patient is be-lieved
to be in the early phase of rejec-tion.
Brown said the pancreas graft was
removed late Wednesday afternoon to
avoid septic complications. However,
he said he and his colleagues did not
know Thursday if the transplant failure
was due to infection or rejection.
"We believe the graft wound was
infected, but we can't rule out rejection
as a factor. We hope to get a better idea
as we gather more data."
Brown was a member of the team
that performed the pancreas trans-plant,
the first in Shreveport and possi-bly
the South.
