An annual construction permits
figure that lagged more than 20
percent behind 1979 statistics just
last month in Shreveport has made a
quick turnabout over the past few
days.
Figures recorded by the city's Per-mits
and Inspection Division show
1980 construction 1.6 percent ahead
of 1979 figures for the week ending
Nov. 7.
A permit for a $21.1 million, 10-
story addition to LSU Hospital, re-ported
by The Times last week, re-duced
a 23 percent decline in con-struction
to about a 6 percent. A
surge of townhouse and single-family
dwelling construction and repairs
and additions to houses contributed
heavily to putting the 1980 construc-tion
mark above 1979's figure when
more than 30 permits were issued.
The permits office shows $111.4
million in permits issued Jan. 1
through Nov. 7, 1980, compared to
$109.5 million for the same period
last year.
Permit figures are based on a set
amount per square foot of construc-tion.
Doc Burnett, head of the permits
division, has predicted 1980 figures
will outdo those recorded in 1979.
