Medical Briefs
The departments of medical and nursing
education at Schumpert Medical Center
and the family medicine department at the
LSUS School of Medicine will sponser a
day-long program, "Headaches and
Seizures," for area physicians and nurses
Friday from 8:50 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the
Schumpert auditorium. Registration will
begin at 8:30 a.m.
Guest faculty will include Dr. Victor M.
Rivera,private practice, neurology; and
clinical assistant professor of neurology at
the University of Texas and Baylor College
of Medicine in Houston; and Elizabeth S.
Woodward, R.N., Ph.D., professor at
Northwestern State University College of
Nursing, Masters Program, and associate
project director, mental health psychiatry
nursing.
Mini-Workshop
Northwestern State University, College
of Nursing, Continuing Education for Re-gistered
Nurses, will present a two-hour
mini-workshop Saturday, May 2, 9:30 to
11:30 a.m. Teresa Kevil, assistant pro-fessor
of nursing in the NSU baccalaureate
program and a certified nurse practitioner
and cardiovascular clinical specialist, will
speak on "Arterial Blood Gases: A Nursing
Perspective."
The workshop will be held on the nursing
campus, 1800 Warrington Place, in
Lecture Room 102. Fee for registering is
$10 and is payable at the door. For more

222-2946.
Nurse of Year Award
The Shreveport District Nurses Associa-tion
will hold its annual Nurse of the Year
Award banquet and dance Friday, May 29,
at the Hilton Inn in Bossier City. Each
hospital or agency is invited to select one
registered nurse to be honored at the
banquet. Names must be submitted to the
program chairman by Friday, May 1.
Those selected must be registered nurses,
members of the Shreveport District Nurses
Association and must have made an excep-tional
contribution to nursing in practice,
education or research.
Tickets for the banquet are on sale at all
area hospitals, through the department of
nursing and by members of the nursing
association, or may be obtained by calling
Pauline Johnson, program chairman, at
222-2946.
Special Skills Seminar
A seminar on the skills necessary to give
deaf patients the quality care they need
will be held for nurses and other health
care professionals on Thursday, April 30, 8
a.m. to 4 p.m., at Willis-Knighton Medical
Center. Dr. Ed Corbitt, director of the'
National Academy, Gallaudet College,
Washington, D.C., will conduct the
workshop through an interpreter.
Named to Board
Seven vacancies on the Louisiana Blood
Center board of trustees have been filled
by citizen and physician representatives
from the center's service area.
Those named to the board and the areas
they represent are Dr. C.B. McAlister,
Bossier Medical Center; W.D. Mabry and
Bailey Thomson, Shreveport citizen
representatives; Mrs. Betty Burgess of
Mansfield, DeSoto Parish; Sachman Marx,
Monroe citizen representative; Dr. A.L.
Green, Glenwood Hospital, West Monroe;
and Dr. Lee R. Pankey, Richland Parish.
Guest Lecturer
Dr. J. Taylor Wharton, professor of
gynecology at the University of Texas
Health Systems, M.D. Anderson Tumor
Institute in Houston, will be guest lecturer
for the LSU Medical Center School of
Medicine's Department of Obstetrics" and
Gynecology on Wednesday. He will lecture
at 7:30 a.m. on "Chemotherapy in the
Treatment of Carcinoma of the Ovary of
Epithelial Origin," and at 8 p.m. will
deliver the Edward J. Crawford Jr.
Memorial Lecture on "The Value of Ag-gressive
Surgical Procedures Upon Ad-vanced
Cancer of the Ovary."
