Dr. Corbett to Visit
Dr. Edward E. Corbett Jr., director of
the National Academy of Gallaudet Col-lege,
Washington, DC., is in Shreveport
this week to assist in the formation of a
central deaf organization. He will conduct
a public forum today at 7:30 p.m. at the
Convention Hall Annex to discuss the
possibility of forming a central organiza-tion
for the deaf, and provide information
on how it can be achieved.
Dr. Corbett will be at LSU Medical
School Wednesday morning to conduct
workshops for nursing personnel. At noon,
he will address the Kiwanis Club to
generate interest in the central deaf or-ganization.
On Thursday, he will conduct workshops
at Willis-Knighton Medical Center, and at
7:30 will meet with the steering committee
at Convention Center Annex to discuss
actual formation of the central organiza-tion.
He will be the principal speaker Friday
for a one-day seminar at Schumpert
Medical Center on health care delivery for
deaf patients. The seminar, under the
direction of Bette Davis, director of nurs-ing
education and sponsored by the Na-tional
Academy of Gallaudet College, is
designed to help health care professionals
achieve a greater understanding of the
assessment and communication needs in a
health care delivery system for deaf pa-tients.
Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the
Schumpert auditorium.
Nursing Graduates
Nursing graduates of the associate
degree program of the Northwestern State
University School of Nursing have
achieved a 92 percent passage rate in the
most recent licensure testing for re-gistered
nurses in Louisiana, according to
Associate Degree Department head Sylvia
W. Rayfield,
The 48 A.D. grauduates who took the
nationally standardized test in Louisiana
showed a cumulative average of 546.9,
according to figures provided by the
Louisiana State Board of Nursing, which
administers the test. The passing score for
minimum safe practice is 350, as set by the
state board.
Medical Records Association
The Northwest Medical Records As-sociation
will meet Thursday, May 7, at
Doctor's Hospital, in the cafeteria con-ference
room. Refreshments will be served
at 5 p.m., followed by a 5:30 p.m. program
and a 6:30 p.m. business meeting. Dr.
James Phillips of the Shreveport Pain and
Rehabilitation Center will speak on "Body
Language and Behavior Techniques."
Guest Speaker
Dr. Peter B. Boggs, director of Schum-pert
Medical Center's Asthma-Allergy Re-.
search Unit, was guest speaker at the 37th
annual meeting of the American College of
Allergists held recently in Washington,
D.C. He presented information gained
through the work of the AARU.
Deaf Signing Class
Ann Bounds, local elementary teacher,
will conduct a class in deaf signing at.
Willis-Knighton Medical Center each Tues-day
and Thursday during the month of
May, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. There is a $10
charge, which includes materials and
refreshments.

booklet on the health and development of
children now is available from the,Coancil

additional copies can be ordered at 30
cents each, prepaid.
