Med School
Affiliation
Began in 1967
By ANN DEMENT
Journal Medical Writer
On June 4, 1967, Dr.
Edgar Hull, dean of
Louisiana State Universi-ty
School of Medicine in
Shreveport and E. P.
Whitaker, director of the
VA Hospital announced
the hospital - school af-filiation.
Although several major
m e d i c a l schools
throughout the country
utilize the services of VA
hospitals, this affiliation
was unique — it was the
first time a medical
school ever began within
the walls of a Veterans
Administration hospital.
The association pro-vided
for the use of all VA
hospital facilities, that all
VA hospital staff are
engaged in teaching or re-search
become part of the
medical school faculty
and that research and
teaching laboratories be
set up at the VA Hospital
to meet the needs of
medical students.
Dr. Ike Muslow, current
dean of the LSU School of
Medicine here, said the
local VA hospital has
been of great help in
starting the medical
school. "The VA gave us
a place to start the
medical school. They
gave us a facility to con-duct
research while we
await completion of our
new building. The VA
Central Office has been
very helpful in securing
research grants for our
faculty."
The VA hospital and the
medical school share the
hospital staff with some
salaries being paid in part
by the VA and in part by
the medical school.
Dr. Muslow explained
that with the presence of
the medical school it is
easier for the VA hospital
to recruit physicians.
Physicians are attracted
to places with teaching
programs, he said, adding
that the VA is also in-creasing
their number of
residency programs.
Dr. Muslow said his
goal is to have the VA
hospital staff, the staff of
Confederate Memorial
Medical Center and the
medical school staff com-bine
as a singular faculty.
"We have been to
Washington in efforts to
combine these three
medical staffs. With a
singular faculty, there
would be a sharing of
hospital services without
costly duplications."
