Gets Funds
For Awards
Presentation of $18,000 for
eight scholarships at
Louisiana State University
School of Medicine in
Shreveport was made yester-day
by the Caddo Parish unit,
American Cancer Society.
Unit president Robert C.
Ewig presented the check to
Dr. Ike Muslow, medical
school dean.
Funding for the grant came
from a legacy left to the local
cancer society by the C. and
F. Keen Estate of Shreveport.
Mr. Keen was a geologist who
lived in Shreveport and who
was a cancer victim, said
Ewig.
Recipients of the eight
$2,250 scholarships funded by
the grant will be announced
this fall, according to medical
school officials.
Purpose of the scholarships,
said Ewig, is to help alert
medical students to the
problem of cancer while
helping provide the students
with additional income.
The scholarships are just
one of the programs the local
unit of the cancer society is
undertaking, according to
Ewig.
Plans are being made to
conduct a pap smear testing
clinic later this year, but a
date has not been set, he said.
In addition there will be a
program Oct. 15 for nurses
dealing with management of
cancer patients.
Representatives from the
local unit will go to New
Orleans for a meeting with the
state cancer society in
October, he added.
