Medical Technologists Schedule Annual Meet
The Louisiana State Society of
Medical Technologists will hold
its 27th annual convention May
7 and 8 here at the Captain
Shreve Hotel.
Some of the n a t i o n 's top
medical technologists are ex-pected
to be among delegates
and guests attending the two-day
event, to be highlighted by
the presentation of the annual
O r t h o Award for the best
scientific paper on blood bank-ing.
Speakers for the event will
include Dr. Arthur L. Fort,
p r o f e s s o r and head of the
department of obstetrics and
gynecology at the LSU Shreve-port
School of Medicine.
Dr. Warren Grafton, director
of clinical l a b o r a t o r i e s at
Confederate Memorial Hospital;
Dr. Ruth Guy, director of the
Parkland Hospital blood bank
and assistant professor of path-ology
at the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical School in
Dallas.
Dr. Bettina Hillman, associate
p r o f e s s o r of pediatrics and
microbiology at LSU Shreve-port.
director of the Shreveport
Cystic Fibrosis Clinic and as-sociate
director of the New
Orleans Cystic Fibrosis Clinic.
Dr. Richard Juberg, associate
professor of pediatrics at LSU
Shreveport; John Liu, clinical
chemist for P. L. Bio Chemi-cals,
Inc., Milwaukee, Wis.; Dr.
Ike Muslow, director of medical
education at Willis Knighton
Hospital, and Dr. Steffen W.
Smith, vice president of re-search
and development for
Stanbio Laboratories.
Also among highlights of the
meeting will be election of new
officers.
Outgoing president is Herbert
W. Goad, education coordinator
for the School of M e d i c a l
Technologists a t Confederate
Memorial. Marie Sanders, out-going
secretary of the organiza-tion,
is a medical technologist at
the Shreveport E m e r g e n c y
Blood Bank.
President elect is Gray Mal-colm
of New Orleans.
Shreveport, with two national-ly
approved schools of medical
technology, Schumpert Memo-rial
Hospital and Confederate
Memorial, is the charter city for
the Society of Medical Technolo-gists.
The society was chartered in
1952 and serves as a regulatory
body for the p r o f e s s i o n in
Louisiana. It is affiliated with
the American Society of Medical
Technologists.
The local and national organi-zations
offer continuation ot
education for interested medical
technologists, scholarships, sem-inars
and legislative representa-tion.
T h e r e are a total of 18
medical technology schools in
Louisiana training some 248
students per year. The local
medical technology schools
train some 20 students per year.
