Pediatrician Says Disease
Increasing Birth Defects
By Margaret Martin
Of The Times Staff
Birth defects related to syphil-is
and gonorrhea are on the
increase across the nation, Dr.
David Shurtleff, professor of
pediatrics at the University of
Washington Medical School,
Seattle, Wash., said in an
interview here yesterday.
Shurtleff, who is also program
director of a National Founda-tion
March of Dimes Birth
Defects Center was here to talk
to the annual medical staff
meeting of Shriner's Hospital,
and other medical groups at the
Louisiana State Univeristy Med-ical
School at Shreveport and
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center.
"Vrhen I came to Seattle in
1960, there were no gonorrhea
babies — in the next six years,
it was 10 times more common,"
he said.
Young people, he said, are
more promiscuous and are
getting less medical care.
Their babies, he said are
born dead and born with lung
infection. "We see babies with
eye infection from gonorrhea —
pus in the eyes," he added,
pointing to a slide olf a 17-day-old
baby, which illustrated his
statement.
There is also a rise in birth
defects among babies whose
mother takes drugs.
But Shurtleff said, "We find,
that these young people also do
not eat properly. They have
j vital. In deficiencies and excess-es.
"They have poor nutrition,
. poor self care.
"They don't bring their kids
in for immunization," he added.
"These kids," he explained
further, "don't like the establ-ishment,
but it's a biological
fact that immunization prevents
disease such as three-day mea-s
1 e s, and the establishment
shouldnt be a factor."
"Some of these just go out of
their way to avoid medical
care," he added. "I try to teach
youth that we developed immun-izations
for a reason."
Discussing the various kinds
of birth defects, Shurtleff said
that in the area of environmen-tal
defects "The three-day mea-sles
should no longer be a
problem . . . the same thing
with polio," because of immuni-zations
for both of these dis-eases.
