Shirkey Medical School to Hold Seminar on Pediatrics "What's New In Pediatrics" will be the theme of a seminar at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreve-port Feb. 10 in the auditorium at Confederate Memorial Medi-cal Center. The program is designed to acquaint interested practitioners in the area with recent ad-vances in the field of pediatrics, a c c o r d i n g to LSU Medical School officials. In recognition of the value of this program to local physicians and others concerned with child health care, Shreveport Mayor Calhoun Allen has agreed to proclaim Feb. 10 "Pediatrics Day" in Shreveport. The guest faculty members will be made honorary citizens of Shreveport. Dr. Robert E. Merrill, profes-sor and chairman of the De-partment of Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas Medical Center, and Dr. Harry C. Shir-key, professor and chairman of Pediatrics at Tulane University School of medicine, will be the guest faculty for the meeting. Local faculty members will be Dr. Joseph A. Little, professor and head of the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Bettina C. Hil-m a n, associate professor of pediatrics, microbiology and im-munology; Dr. Richard C. Jub-erg, associate professor of pe-diatrics and director of the Birth Defects Center; Dr. Ralph W. Baucum Jr., assistant pro-fessor of pediatrics, and Dr. Juan J. Gershanik, assistant professor of pediatrics, all at the local school of medicine. The meetings will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The program is acceptable for six prescribed hours by the American Acade-my of Family physicians. Merrill will discuss "Experi-ences with Nurse Practitioners and Their Possible Role in the Delivery of Health Care," while Shirkey's topic will be "Adverse Drug Reactions Related to Growth and Development." Dr. Hilman's topic will be "Which Babies Should be Immu-nized and How," while Baucum will discuss "Screening School Children for Heart Disease," and Gershanik, "Caring Inten-sively." Little will talk about 'Venereal Disease, Resurgent," and Jub-erg will discuss "Whose Chro-mosomes to Count." Merrill is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pedia-trics and the American Acade-my for Cerebral Palsy. He is the author of over 20 publica-tions dealing with a variety of subjects of clinical interest in pediatrics. Shirkey is both a pharmacist and a physician. He is a member of the American Aca-demy of Pediatrics, the Ameri-can Pediatrics Society and the American Pharmaceutical Soci-ety. He has published over 50 articles in professional journals.
