A historical collection on medicine
dating back to 1743 is now accessible
lo the public.
The History of Medicine Room,
located on the campus of LSU Health
Sciences Center in Shreveport. was
dedicated Wednesday. It is open
during regular library hours. For the
general public, those hours are 9 a.m.
to 6 p.m. weekdays.
The collection is housed in Building
C on the south side of the campus,
1501 Kings Highway in Shreveport
"There are details about how amputation was done, and we also have a
Civil War amputation kit. As you look at some of the instruments,
it makes you hope these people were asleep."
Dee Jones, head of cataloging for the History of Medicine Room at LSU Health Sciences Center
"Many of the books and artifacts
were already a part of the library's
collection, but there was never a nice
way to display diem," said Dee Jones,
head of cataloging for the library.
"Medical Center Clinics Inc., a non-profit
group, funded the renovation
of the room. And we have cataloged
every item to make it easier to search
for information."
More thai 3,000 books make up the
collection, which includes reprints of
classic medical texts and books that
reference the history of various sub-jects.
Also included are medical dic-tionaries,
biographies, journals and
medical fiction. In addition, there
are about 500 artifacts that include
antique medical instruments, antique
scientific equipment and machines.
"One of the interesting subjects is
on medicine during the Civil War,"
Jones said. "There are details about
how amputation was done, and we
also have a Civil War amputation kit
As you look at some of the instru-ments,
it makes you hope these
people were asleep."
The collection should be a good
research tool for students and
teachers, as well as being interesting
for either liistory or medical profes-sion
zealots, Jones said.
Medical Center Clinics is an organi-zation
of community physicians who
served as visiting staff at LSU Health
Sciences Center-Shreveport when it
was known as Confederate Memo-rial
Medical Center, from 1953 to
1970. Their voluntary service paved
die way for Confederate Memorial to
evolve into the medical center.
