Dr. Meneely Says-
Medical School Budget
May Reach $6,000,000
"Planning for the New LSU
Medical School in Shreveport"
vas the topic of an address
oday by Dr. George E.
Meneely, associate dean of the
bcliool, at a meeting of the
Shreveport Rotary Club.
Dr. Meneely said the school,
vhen completed and in full
operation, will be one of the
argest medical and medical
educational centers in the
South and said "we intend it
will be among the best." At
his time, he said, the operat-ng
budget is estimated at $4 to
i6 million per year and the
acuity will surely be 150
ull-time men and a vastly
arger number in part time
work.
IN REVIEWING THE plan-ning
for the school, he said the
Louisiana S t a t e University
Medical Center, Shreveport
School of Medicine, is by no
means a new idea, pointing out
ocuments in the files concern-ng
specific plans which date
back 15 years.
"The new school will be
erected on land leased from
Confederate Memorial Medical
Center and will be located
between the present hospital
building and the existing school
of nursing," he said. "Various
affiliation agreements will be
worked out with other institu-tions
in the community and we
will, in the future, utilize not
only the clinical teaching re-sources
of Confederate Memo-rial
Medical Center, but also
the Pines Sanitorium and the
Veterans Administration Hospi-tal
and a considerable number
of other institutions and organi-zations
in the community.
"WE WILL CERTAINLY re-late
in a systematic manner to
all other higher educational
enterprises in this city and
nearby and most particularly
these will include cooperation
with Centenary College and our
sister i n s t i t u t i o n , LSU in
Shreveport.
"While the population of this
metropolitan area e x c e e d s
300,000," he said, "the 'pa-tient-
shed' will surely extend to
and beyond the one million
circle, an area containing more
than 3 million people."
Dr. Meneely said the school
was authorized by Legislature
in 1965 and capital funding was
assured by a $10 million bond
issue in 1966. Later that same
year Dean Edgar Hull and
Associate Dean Dr. Meneely
were appointed.
HE SAID EDUCATIONAL
activities at the school will
begin in the fall of 1969 in
temporary , quarters with an
entering class of 30 to 40
medical students.
In due course, he said, this
will rise to an entering class of
100, but it will be a decade
before the new school is
operating a full strength.
