An article by Louisiana State
University Medical School at
Shreveport professor, Dr. Rob-ert
D. Knapp, appeared in the
October issue of ''Canadian
Family Physician."
The a r t i c l e , "Abortion: A
Threat to the Medical Profes-sion"
deals with his feelings on
the subject, as well as the
feelings of various physician
groups he interviewed while on
a trip to Europe.
It follows an article he did
last October for ''The Journal of
the Louisiana State Medical
Society, "Similarly I Will Not
. . . Cause Abortion."
In his article in the Canadian
publication, Knapp said "when
physicians participate in abor-t
i o n for non life-threatening
indications, or even approve of
other physicians doing so, they
dishonor great physicians of the
past and they debase their
profession."
Knapp feels- that among all
the changes the medical profes-sion
is undergoing at this time,
"those relating to abortion seem
the most dangerous because of
important interprofessional re-percussions."
He feels that the arguments
used on philosophical, theologi-cal
and legal grounds that the
embryo is- or is not alive or a
person are unfounded.
"Such grounds at one time
were the only ones available,"
he says in the journal, "but
surely the invention of the
microscope and the elaboration
of sophisticated m e t h o d s of
using that instrument have
changed the picture . . ."
And, Knapp says, "most im-portant
was Pasteur's demon-stration
that spontaneous gener-ation
does not occur, that living
things arise only from living
things, that life, in effect, no
longer begins — life continues,
or it ceases."
Knapp says he feels that
physicians should put aside
theological and political views,
in their roles as doctors.
He also said that he thinks
certain positive attitudes of
doctors towards abortion will
have a bearing on referrals
from other members of the
profession.
