On the 1 July I set out from Spillers having prevailed on Mr
Cosby Register of Land Claims to accompany me to a thickly settled
neighborhood on the Boguechitto on the county of St Tammany we
crossed on our way the Tickfoha Tanchipahoa & Tchifonta these
streams are rapid and transparent and the land bordering on them
fertile, no other part of the country is worth cultivating. The
whole extent between the water courses being pine barrens for
many miles you will see no other kind of tree, the grass although
coarse is high & verdant and affords fine pasturage for cattle
the principal wealth of the inhabitants, traveling was warm &
disagreeable and the flies so tormented the horses that it was
with great difficulty they could be prevented from stopping &
lying down many of the people are under the impression that the
Spaniards will again take possession of the country the opinion
