Opelousas March 1st 1815
Dear Sir
You will no doubt be much
surprised at my long silence & as usual in such
cases ascribe it to neglect for the last thirty
days except yesterday and the day before no
day has been mine. I was employed by General
[Lachfou?] to explore the inlets that enter the
sea east of the English turn - on my report
a Fort was constructed at the confluence
of Bayou Terre aux Boeufs and Lake Levy
The superintendence of which was given to me
I effected the work placed the guns and garison
made Report attended Genl Gaines in
an inspection of the place met his approbation,
the Fort received my name returned
with G.l Gaines to New Orleans
remained there one night set out with him
to [Petite Coqville?] & the [Chef Menteur?]
and rested from my labors the day before
yesterday - I hope the above brief recital
will be an excuse for not writing.
Every eye is now watching for the [?]
every Ear impatiently awaits the joyfulness
of peace - The mail has failed how
far public hopes may lie gratified
remains in darkness if the terms are
honorable and safe peace is desirable but
