/ dup / New Orleans Septemb. [September] 5, 1814.
Messrs Brown & Ives,
Gentlemen,
We have received Your esteemed
favor of 8 July - We observe the danger with which
you are threatened but trust it will not be realized.
We heard by the last mail that the enemy had
appeared before new Port & demanded a surrender
and are very anxious to hear the result.
Our situation here also grows alarming, 'tis said
some British troops have landed at Pensacola
& 4500 more expected & that an attack on this place
is intended : 'tis to be regretted that our principal defence
is mud, mosquitos & Climate - Jackson however,
is at Mobile with 2000 men & we are glad to hear he
has made peace with the Creeks; we shall also have
considerable force in Militia & the 44.th regiment, now
recruiting & probably, when it is too late, a force may
arrive from Kentucky.
Your Cotton we presume remains free from damage
being in an excellent Store & as little exposed to risk as
any store in the City : we mean particularly the 526 bales.
We remain respectfully,
Y.r mo. ob.t [Your most obedient] Servants,
Talcott & Bowers
