The board of supervisors o Louisiana State university Sat urday approved the immediate activation in New Orleans o; the school of dentistry authorized by the board in 1935 and set 1970 as the goal for the first graduating class.
Also, the board approved establishment of a program leading to bachelor .degrees in engineering sciences at Louisiana State University in New Orleans.
And it okayed an autonomous school of veterinary medicine, to be located on the Baton Rouge campus as soon as funds are made available.
During its meeting, which was held on the campus of LSUNO, the board elected Baton Rouge businessman Percy E. Roberts as its new chairman. Roberts, a former state, representative from East Baton Rouge parish, succeeds John J. Doles of [Plain Dealing.
!,■ Other new officers chosen include Joseph C. LeSage Jr., Shreveport attorney and former jLSU football star, vice-chair* I man, and Mrs. Ella V. Aldrich jSchwing of Plaquemines, for-" j mer books and libraries in-j.structor at LSU, secretary.
The immediate activation of the dental school was part of an overall development plan for LSU's medical center presented to the board by Dr. William W. Frye, vice* president- and dean of the school of medicine.
Dr. Frye said the location of the dental school in New; Orleans would be more econom-
ically feasible because LSU's school of medicine here has' facilities and faculty common: to both medicine and dentistry* COST LESS IN' N. O. .
He estimated that the development of the dental school in cooperation with the medical;; school in New Orleans would cost $4 million, whereas the development of separate facilities elsewhere in the state would cost at least $6 million•■ "and probably closer to $8 mil-Ilion."
He said the dental school i would include courses in dentistry, oral surgery, dental PHOTO: PERCY ROBERTS
