A $10,439 grant for the creation of a cancer research laboratory was awarded to Charity hospital Friday by the Greater New Orleans Cancer Association, Inc. ■
Dr~, J. V. Schlosser, president of the association, presented the grant to Dr. Leo J. Kern, director of Charity hospital. Also taking f>art in the ceremony were Robert £. Elliott, treasurer of the association, and Dr. Don L. Peterson, vice-president of the board of administrators of Charity.
"Through this grant," said Dr. Schlosser, "we are furthering the activities of research and service of the cancer association." FIRST TO HOSPITAL
He said that this was the first grant made by the association to Charity hospital. The cancer association is an agency of the United Fund.
The laboratory established by^ the grant will be part of the de-; partment of pathology on the 11th | floor of the hospital. Here, a study! of cells will be made to be used: in the early detection of cancer, j
"We know, not hope but know," said Dr. Schlosser, "that through this facility we will save more lives through early detection of cancer."
The laboratory will also be used by Tulane, Loyola and Louisiana State university for reasearch and study,
. A. P. Richard, assistant director of the hospital, said that the laboratory will be part of a more e::!:ensive program to renovate the pathology department,
"And, we're looking for personnel to staff the laboratory," he sa:d. "Persons trained in cytology, the study of the cell, are har€ to find."
In accepting the grant, Dr. Kern sa'd that "a big medical center; sirh as Charity should have such a lab it's a necessity."
The grant was made with the cooperation af the Cancer Society of Greater Baton Rouge, also an; agency of the United Fund organi-l zation. ,
