Bright elected by United Fund: Sarpy Says Organization in 'Vigorous State'

              Edgar A. G. Bright Sr., a for­mer president of the New Or­leans Cotton Exchange and of the Dock Board, Tuesday was elected president of the United Fund.
Bright was named to the of­fice immediately following a UF membership meeting in the New Orleans public library au­ditorium. During the member­ship meeting, retiring UF pres­ident Leon Sarpy gave the an­nual report for the organiza­tion.
"I can report that the greater New Orleans area is a finer home town because of the com­munity teamwork that trans­pires under the United Fund banner," Sarpy said.
The outgoing president noted that '$3,180,000 was raised by the UF, last year — a 2V2 per cent increase over the previous year.
OFFERS NO ALIBI
"There are those who will say that the campaign would have raised more were it not for the strikes that hit in the steei industry and on the docks, coupled with rate difficulties in our port," he said.
"But the campaign organiza­tion neither offered not sought alibis."           >
Sarpy described the UF as be­ing- in a "vigorous state of health." He added that '-'it-will continue to grow and serve more effectively the community which gave it birth."
- ASSUMES LEADERSHIP
Bright, immediately after his election, assumed the position of top man for the area's forth­coming ninth annual UF drive.
"I greatly appreciate the con­fidence placed in me and with
the help of all the officers and the advice of the board, I hope to do an adequate job and ap­proach the outstanding plateau to which our former president has placed the organization," Bright said.
The board of trustees of the UF also selected the other new officers for, the year.
They are Morgan Whitney, senior vice-president; E. M. Rowley, J. Mason Guillory, Charles Schwartz Jr., Leon Cahn, and Mrs. J. Skelly Wright, vice-presidents, and Francis C Doyle, treasurer.
23 NAMED TO BOARD
Contributors and agency rep­resentatives elected 23 new members to the 63-member board during the membership meeting.
As a special tribute to his 35 years of service to the old Com­munity Chest and the UF, Dr. Emil Leipziger, rabbi emeritus of Touro synagogue, was elected an honorary member of the board of trustees.    .

Bright served as senior vice-president of the UF last year. As retiring president, Sarpy succeeds Walter Barnett as chairman of the nominating committee, which is composed of past presidents.
Whitney, a former president of the Metropolitan Crime Com­mission, has been active in the UF's special gifts group for many years.
Rowley succeeds C. B. Pres-cott as vice president and chair­man of the campaign commit­tee.
Guillory succeeds Joe Simon as vice-president and chairman of the public relations commit­tee. Cahn takes over from Col­ton as chairman of the admis-sionsand capital campaigns committee.
Schwartz and Mrs. Wright were re - elected vice-presidents in charge of the budget committee and the women's co-ordinating committee, respectively.
Doyle succeeds Dr. Redmond as treasurer and chairman of the operating and administrative1 committee.
Winners in the first annual in­dustrial editors contest, sponsored by the UF and the Industrial Edi-tors of Louisiana, received awards during the membership meeting.                                   ;j
UNITED FUND STORY
The contest was for industrial publications "which best tell the United Fun(J story."
Don Schultz of New Orleans Public Service Inc. received the grand award trophy.
Certificates went to Joe Eng-lert of the Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Co., best cover; Ken­neth Jamron of Touro Infirmary, best editorial; and Miss Anne Gause of Sears-Roebuck, best fea­ture.
