The Greater New Orleans Cancer Association, operating as a local corporation, will aim the big gun of scientific research against humanity's common enemy, cancer, with the aid of topflight New Orleans area scientists.
The association, which was expelled from the American Cancer Society because it refused to withdraw from the United Fund, will devote its entire energies toward the promotion of cancer research and education.
The group rebelled this year
when the American Cancer
Society set a policy requiring
! all local units to withdraw
I from membership in the Uriit-
j ed Fund and conduct separate
and independent fund raising
campaigns.
Local Level Now
Acting now on a local level, the association today said it will continue its work of contributing funds for medical research, with the difference that money raised in this area will remain in the area.
The money previously was sent to New York and administered from, there.
A group of New Orleans area scientists, doctors and civic leaders has been chosen as a research advisory committee to aid in proper placement of research funds.
"Our money will remain in this area, and be administered by these responsible members of the area who are well qualified and who are dedicated to the cause of fighting cancer," said Dr. Joseph V. Schlosser, association president.
Committee Members
Applications for research grants are already being received, and money is being released.
Research advisory committee members are:
Dr. Oscar Creech Jr., chairman, professor and chairman of the Tulane university medical school department of surgery.
