Gov. Earl K. Long is now under the care of virtual strangers as he remains ill at a Covington motel.
With the governor suffering from a nervous breakdown and a serious heart condition, no member of his immediate family and none of his political lieutenants are now at his bedside. Trooper Bodyguard Only Friend
In direct charge of the governor is a young psychiatrist whom the governor scarcely knew before last Friday, when he was released from a mental institution, and a red-haired nurse.
The only friend in close attendance as the governor's health steadily weakens is a state trooper who has served as his bodyguard.
The three are Dr. Paul Pratt, a crew-cut, dark-haired young man who is a member of the Tulane university medical school faculty; Mrs. Camilla Jett, the nurse, and Lt. Russell Willie, the state trooper. No Kin Except Cousin Present
A stream of state officials and political friends has visited the governor since last Friday, but theirs have been "social calls," as they describe them, and they have not remained.
No member of the governor's family, with the exception of a cousin, David J. Bell, has been seen with him since Friday.
Dr. Pratt has been the man in personal charge of the governor since his release. Assigned to the governor by Tulane and Louisiana State university doctors, he accompanied the governor on his junket to Winnfield over the week end on his midnight ride for dinner yesterday. Delivers Sensational Charge
The doctor has had a difficult time keeping up with his patient. When they arrived back at the motel at 3:30 a. m. yesterday after the ride, the psychiatrist was sound asleep
in the governor's Cadillac. Gov. Long, very much awake at 3:30 a. m., woke him up.
The governor then summoned a sleepy repoii;er who had been holding vigil under a pine tree on the motel lawn and delivered his sensational charge that Mrs. Long had attempted to hire a man to kill the governor.
Dr. Pratt has served as a combination doctor and public relations man for the governor. He has transmitted the. requests of newsmen to Long, emerged from the motel room to give reports or statements, and stood by helplessly as the governor has insisted on holding press conferences.
Yesterday, after reporters had asked for a brief statement from Dr. Pratt on the governor's morning activities, tiie doctor returned to call a "two-minute press conference" with the governor himself. Ignores Two-Minute Agreement
At the conference, the doctor repeatedly asked the governor to bring the session to a close, reminding him and newsmen of the "two-minute agreement," but the governor continued to talk and to solicit questions from the reporters. , ,
In addition to serving on the Tulane medical school faculty, Dr. Pratt is a member of the staff at East Louisiana State hospital, a mental institution at Jackson. He is the son of an old friend of the governor's.
Willie, a personable young man who has been assigned to the governor at the mansion at Baton Rouge for several years, is the liaison man between the state troopers, guests and the governor's room. Everybody Keports to Willie
Visitors, St. Tammany parish deputies arriving with meals or packages, and other troopers report to Willie. He relays the information to Dr. Pratt and Long or ushers in the guests.
Willie was among those who attempted to persuade the governor to leave a state police car for the one which was to take him to Southeast Louisiana State hospital at Mandeville when the governor was committed to the institution on Thursday, June 18.
He then rode at the governor's side to the hospital and
