As amazing as this may sound St is all part of a very serioui long-range project being carriec on at Charity hospital in co operation with 17 other mediea centers of the nation.
Infants ranging in age fron one month to 15 months are be Ing tested for such tftings a* motor skills, speech develop ment, eye-hand co-ordination, verbal skills, power of observation, concentration, emotional and mental reactions.
Overall conclusions will not be reached until the project has been under way for five years. Bui when these conclusions are finally formulated, they may prove of inestimable value to parents, child; guidance authorities, pediatricians and young couples who are planning on adopting babies. TOO EARLY TO TELL
Psychologists from the Louisiana State university m e d i c a 1 school are doing the testing. Although they have been carrying on these tests for a year now they say it'is still too early to te}l. Quite honestly they admit that ultimate findings may prove disappointing.
In the meantime the tests go on twice a week at Charity. Sitting in on one of them can prove a* completely fascinating experience.
The other day we watched while nine-months-old Charlotte was being tested.
The baby, on her mother's lap, ivas on one side of a square table. On the other side was the psychologist, Mrs. Verdun Daste, herself the mother of six.
First Mrs. Daste"1 dangled a red plasjtic ring in front of Char-1 totte's eyes. The baby made a ?rab for the ring, shoved it into ler mouth. Retrieving it the )sychologist repeated the proce-lurey
"Pretty.!" she suggested. Ands igain Charlotte grabbed. Again j he shoved the ring into herj nouth. This, however, was what | he was supposed to do.
